Vietnam veterans remembered at annual service
VIETNAM veterans, their families and members of the public from across the Ararat, Northern Grampians and Pyrenees municipalities are invited to gather in Ararat later this month to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
Previously known as Long Tan Day, the annual Vietnam Veterans’ Day ceremony is run by the Grampians sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Federation and is rotated annually between Ararat, Pyrenees Shire and Northern Grampians Shire.
It’s an occasion to mark the sacrifice and suffering of those who fought in Vietnam.
The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th Century.
The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war.
By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 523 of them died and 3000 were wounded.
Local mayors, politicians and members of the public have been invited to attend the 60th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan.
The Grampians Vietnam Veterans Day memorial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday the 18th of August at the Ararat Cenotaph followed by morning tea at the Ararat RSL.
All veterans, their families and members of the public are welcome to attend.
