Riddell stars as Rhymney/Moyston stun ladder leaders
Rhymney/Moyston has ended Halls Gap Kookaburras' unbeaten run in the Horsham Cricket Association’s C-Grade season with a commanding 39-run win at Moyston Recreation Reserve last Saturday, with Solmon Riddell the star of the show with an unbeaten 52 and four wickets.
After winning the toss and batting first, Rhymney/Moyston, led by Riddell, were on a mission. After being dropped earlier in the innings, he batted beautifully for his half-century and was well assisted by Daniel Walker and Nathan Quick, with 21 and 32 runs, respectively.
David Cosgriff produced a cameo at the bottom of the order, scoring ten runs as Rhymney/Moyston made 165 from their 40 overs.
Charlie McIntosh was the pick of the Kookaburras bowlers with 3/11 (3), while Adam McCormack (2/30) and Bailey Stirling (2/34) also bowled well.
Rhmney/Moyston’s defence started well, with Clinton Slorach dismissing Spencer Campbell and Adam McCormack for four and 11 runs respectively, to have the Kookaburras at 2/21.
Charlie McIntosh and Bailey Stirling brought the Kookaburras back into the contest with a stunning 78-run partnership before Nathan Quick caught McIntosh off Daniel Taylor’s bowling for 35.
Shortly after, Clinton Slorach caught Joshua Leith off Lucas Ralph’s bowling, and the Kookaburras were 4/108.
Riddell then came into the attack and claimed the next four wickets for 17 runs, including the dangerous Bailey Stirling for 46, and when Sky Ralph took the game-winning catch off Scotney Hayter’s bowling, Rhymney/Moyston celebrated a sensational victory.
Riddell finished with figures of 4/2 (3), while Clinton Slorach finished with 2/22 (6).
With skipper Trevor Quick heading to Egypt, Scotney Hayter took the captaincy reins and said the result was a culmination of hard work that started at training.
“We had a ripping training session during the week, and it paid off big time on Saturday,” he said.
“They gave us a touch-up before Christmas, so we knew we were in for a tough day and that showed when we were 3/26 and under pressure.
“Thankfully, Solmon [Riddell] and Dan [Walker] steadied the ship, and with help from Nathan Quick, we made 165, and while it wasn’t massive, it was definitely something to bowl at.”
Hayter highlighted the message at the innings break.
“The message was quite simple, and that was to keep the bowling tight,” he said.
“We mixed things up and opened with Clinton Slorach and Dan Walker, and it worked. Both bowled absolute gems and piled the pressure on and gave Halls Gap batters nothing.”
Hayter wanted to thank David Padley for his field placements.
“David’s cricket brain was in overdrive with some brilliant and creative field placements,” he said.
“Overall, everyone played their part, and it was a team effort.”
