Modifications unveiled for local wind project

THE proponent of the Ballyrogan Wind Farm has reduced the size of the project and increased the set-back distance in a big revision of the project. The layout for Squadron Energy’s Ballyrogan Wind Farm has been updated, incorporating a minimum two kilometre set-back distance from any wind turbine to surrounding neighbours, unless otherwise agreed.

The current design proposes 114 turbines, down from the originally proposed 164, which will be capable of delivering up to 684 megawatts of clean energy.

Squadron Energy’s General Manager Development, Alastair Smith said that since announcing the project in late June 2025, members of the team have met with host landowners and members of the local community, which has helped with the revised layout.

“These conversations have helped the team modify the project design, resulting in an overall reduction in the project footprint and number of wind turbines proposed,” Mr Smith said.

“We value the community’s feedback and have listened to their concerns, which has helped to shape the current design including reducing the number of turbines and ensuring a two kilometre set-back.

Mr Smith said the revised layout may potentially undergo further changes as the project is fine tuned.

“The project layout may continue to change as we gain further feedback and depending on technical and environmental assessments.”
